India's National Highway Network Expands to 146,560 km, Becomes Second Largest Globally
India's highway network has expanded to 146,560 km, making it the second largest in the world, as reported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). This growth of approximately 61% from 91,287 km in 2014 to 146,560 km in 2025 is attributed to initiatives such as Bharatmala Pariyojana and the LWE Road Development Programme.
The length of operational access-controlled corridors increased from 93 km in 2014 to 3,052 km, and the length of 4-lane highways more than doubled to 43,512 km. MoRTH has monetized ₹1,52,028 crore through asset monetization and set a target of ₹30,000 crore for FY 2025-26.
Plans include the development of 35 multimodal logistics parks under Bharatmala, capable of handling 700 million metric tonnes of cargo. Recent projects include the Sonamarg Tunnel and hydrogen-powered trucks, as well as enhancements in vehicle safety and a cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims.
