India's Net Zero Mission Requires 500 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity and BESS Implementation

India aims for net-zero emissions by 2070, requiring 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity and 50% renewable electricity by 2030. The intermittency of solar and wind energy necessitates Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for effective energy management.

By 2031-32, India needs 73.93 GW of storage, including 47.24 GW from BESS, significantly increasing from current levels. The BESS market is projected to grow from USD 1.54 billion in 2025 to USD 6.67 billion by 2030, driven by policy support, declining costs, and proven deployments.

BESS will provide critical services such as time-shift energy, frequency regulation, voltage support, and peak shaving, essential for stabilizing the grid as coal generation phases out by 2060. The government's initiatives and indigenous solutions like GoodEnough Energy's StorEDge aim to enhance energy security and manufacturing capabilities, vital for achieving net-zero targets.
