India's Power Sector Transformation: Role of Transformers in Energy Security and Industrial Growth
India's power sector is evolving with a budget allocation of Rs. 2.99 lakh crore for FY2026-27 to enhance energy infrastructure. Projected power demand is 277 GW in FY26, and energy generation will rise from 1,168 BU in 2015-16 to an estimated 1,824 BU in 2024-25, with installed capacity exceeding 476 GW.
Transformers are essential for stable electricity flow, impacting industrial growth, which requires uninterrupted power projected at 1,650 TWh by 2035. The Central Electricity Authority has raised concerns over potential outages during peak months.
Additionally, only 0.2 GWh of battery storage exists against the need for 236.22 GWh by 2030, highlighting integration challenges. Supply chain disruptions have extended lead times for equipment, necessitating domestic manufacturing and resilient supply chains.
