India's River Basin Management Scheme to Enhance Water Governance from 2026 to 2031
India's River Basin Management Scheme is set to invest Rs 2,183 crore from 2026-27 to 2030-31 to improve water governance. This initiative will utilize advanced technologies to address water management challenges across major river basins.

The River Basin Management Scheme in India, overseen by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, focuses on sustainable water use across key basins such as Brahmaputra, Barak, Teesta, and Indus, with an estimated budget of Rs 2,183 crore for the 2026-31 period. Implemented by the Brahmaputra Board, Central Water Commission, and National Water Development Agency, the scheme aims to prepare basin master plans, conduct surveys, and develop multipurpose projects while addressing capacity gaps in states like Jammu & Kashmir and Sikkim.
Advanced technologies such as GIS and remote sensing will aid in improving river basin planning and project execution, which is critical for managing floods, erosion, and ecological degradation. Effective implementation of this scheme may lead to increased irrigation capacity and enhanced hydropower generation.
