Indonesia Advances Pyrolysis Technology to Support Waste-to-Energy Initiatives
Indonesia is promoting pyrolysis technology to enhance waste-to-energy (WtE) facilities, addressing limitations in current waste processing. This initiative aims to convert up to 20% of the nation's waste into renewable fuel, supporting national waste management goals.

The Indonesian government is advancing pyrolysis technology alongside the construction of 13 waste-to-energy (WtE) plants, of which one in Palembang is expected to commence operations by October 2026. Current WtE facilities will only manage approximately 22% of national waste, indicating a significant need for additional processing methods.
The adoption of pyrolysis is anticipated to mitigate 20% of the waste issue, turning landfill waste into renewable diesel-like fuel. Collaborative pilot projects involving the Indonesian Army and local governments are underway in five regions, including Jakarta and Semarang. Accelerating waste management is crucial for reducing landfill accumulation and fire risks during dry seasons, while also providing economic benefits.
