Indonesia Advances Undersea Cable System to Enhance National Internet Connectivity

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Indonesia is developing the Undersea Cable Communication System (SKKL) to improve national internet services, enabling connections between islands and internationally. This system will handle data traffic, providing fast, stable connections with high capacity to support digital transformation and data center development.

The co-founder of Super Sistem Group, Marshall Jahja, emphasized that undersea cables are crucial for data center growth. Key requirements for hyperscale data center investment include connectivity (fiber optic), electrical supply, and water reservoirs for cooling systems.

Indonesia aims to strengthen its fiber optic infrastructure by constructing four undersea cable gateways in Batam, Manado, Kupang, and Papua. Currently, Super Sistem is collaborating with Telkom on the Bifrost Cable System in Manado, which will connect Eastern Indonesia to the Asia-Pacific over 20,000 kilometers.
