Indonesia Revises Bauxite Pricing, Lowers Benchmark by 15% Effective April 15, 2026
Indonesia's new bauxite pricing mechanism, effective April 15, 2026, reduces benchmark prices by 15% while enhancing ore quality transparency. Despite the adjustments, the revised benchmark remains higher than actual market transaction values, emphasizing the ongoing impact of market dynamics.

Indonesia will revise its bauxite pricing strategy under Kepmen ESDM No. 144.K/MB.01/MMEM.B/2026 on April 15, 2026, lowering benchmark prices while incorporating moisture and silica penalties. The new mechanism transitions from dry-tonne to wet-tonne pricing, resulting in a calculated HPM of approximately $44 per tonne for typical grade bauxite, down from $52.
However, current spot prices are assessed at $30-35 per tonne, indicating a significant gap. The introduction of moisture adjustments is expected to lower government royalties, but actual transaction prices may remain below the revised benchmarks due to ongoing operational costs and market conditions. Miners must provide detailed quality data for compliance, amidst rising fiscal pressures.
