Innovative Hydropower System Harnesses Canals for Clean Energy
Emily Morris and Thorsten Stoesser developed a modular hydropower system that operates within existing canals, targeting renewable energy expansion without the need for large dams. This technology could utilize underexploited renewable resources from current water infrastructures, potentially transforming energy generation in irrigation districts and wastewater facilities.

Morris and Stoesser's modular hydropower system integrates into existing waterways, generating between 5 and 25 kW per module. Designed for irrigation districts and wastewater facilities, this system allows for the installation of multiple units along canals to harness flow efficiently.
The technology represents a shift from traditional dam-based hydropower, minimizing ecological disruption by utilizing man-made channels. However, the implementation will require careful ecological assessments and long-term performance data to evaluate its viability. The European Patent Office recognized the inventors as finalists for the 2026 European Inventor Award for their contributions to renewable energy, although they did not win.
