Innovative Method Converts Mixed Plastic Waste into Hydrogen Fuel
A new method developed by scientists in California and South Korea aims to convert mixed plastic waste into hydrogen while capturing carbon. This technology could potentially achieve hydrogen production costs of $4 per kilogram, in line with North American green hydrogen rates.

Researchers from Ewha Womans University and UCLA have created a process that transforms mixed plastic waste into high-purity hydrogen and solid sodium carbonate, minimizing carbon emissions. The method operates at lower temperatures than traditional gasification, reducing energy use and allowing for nearly unprocessed waste.
The process can effectively handle various types of plastics, including food-contaminated materials, and may simplify recycling efforts by diminishing the need for extensive sorting. However, experts caution that the economic viability of this technology may depend on consistent waste streams and adequate processing infrastructure. Current hydrogen production heavily relies on natural gas, emphasizing the need for more affordable and cleaner hydrogen options.
