SunHydrogen Achieves Over 10% Solar-to-Hydrogen Efficiency with New Module
SunHydrogen's 100 cm² hydrogen modules have surpassed 10% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency in preliminary tests. This advancement is critical for the commercial viability of hydrogen production technologies, potentially lowering costs and enhancing energy sustainability.

Iowa-based SunHydrogen has achieved solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiencies exceeding 10% with its 100 cm² modules during tests at Sparc Hydrogen's laboratories. The modules previously demonstrated an efficiency of 10.8% at Honda's R&D facilities.
SunHydrogen's technology integrates a semiconductor-electrocatalyst design for direct hydrogen generation from sunlight, eliminating the need for separate electrolyzer stacks. A collaboration with Sparc Hydrogen aims to integrate these modules into concentrated sunlight reactors to further reduce hydrogen production costs.
Future developments may push efficiency towards 15% and involve larger manufacturable modules. The outcomes of these efforts could significantly impact hydrogen production economics and adoption in the renewable energy sector.
