Inquiry Initiated for Rockcliffe Gasification Plant Planning Permission
An inquiry is underway in Carlisle to reassess a rejected gasification plant proposal using waste to generate energy. The outcome could influence future waste management strategies in the region.

The planning inquiry for a proposed gasification plant near Carlisle commenced following Cumberland Council's rejection of the project due to health concerns. North West Regeneration is appealing this decision, arguing that the health fears are unfounded, while local residents and council lawyers maintain that there are valid health risks associated with gasification plants.
The facility would convert waste into gas, primarily hydrogen and carbon monoxide, to generate electricity for a nearby processing site and export surplus power to the National Grid. Ongoing discussions may shape local waste management policies and energy strategies as the inquiry progresses until 12 June.
