INS Taragiri Commissioning Highlights Role of Indian MSMEs in Naval Upgrades and Exports
The commissioning of INS Taragiri by the Indian Navy, built with over 75% indigenous content from 200+ MSMEs, marks a significant advancement in India's defense sector. The ship underscores India's capabilities in high-end shipbuilding and positions the country as a competitive player in global naval upgrades and retrofit markets. The estimated retrofit market, targeting budget-constrained navies in Southeast Asia and Africa, presents opportunities for Indian MSMEs to generate recurring revenue streams. Government initiatives are further supporting this growth.

The Indian Navy will commission the stealth frigate INS Taragiri (F41) on April 3, 2026, in Visakhapatnam. Built with over 75% indigenous content from more than 200 MSMEs, Taragiri signifies a leap in India's shipbuilding capabilities.
The advanced CODOG propulsion system enhances operational flexibility, appealing to both military and commercial sectors. India's defense exports reached ₹23,622 crore (approx. $2.8 billion) in FY 2024-25, with a goal of ₹50,000 crore by 2029. The potential for leasing agreements and joint ventures with neighboring countries could further enhance India's maritime security collaboration and export strategy.
