International Collaboration Established to Propel Tees Valley and Western Australia Towards a Net Zero Future

HYDROGENCARBON CAPTURE

An international partnership has emerged, linking the Tees Valley with Western Australia in a formidable effort to achieve net zero emissions. Teesside University's Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre (NZIIC), the University of Western Australia (UWA), and the Centre of Decommissioning Australia (CODA) have formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding. This agreement aims to establish a joint innovation hub that will expedite the transition to a sustainable future in both regions.

Dr. Gari Harris, Director of NZIIC, emphasized the commitment to developing technologies that contribute to a cleaner environment. This collaboration signifies a pivotal advancement in fostering a globally connected yet locally focused innovation ecosystem. The proposed Western Australia Industry Transformation Hub is poised to unite academic prowess, industry leadership, and government backing to spearhead innovations in decarbonization and local manufacturing.

Each partner brings invaluable expertise to the initiative, including established relationships within the UK industrial sector and a proven history of assisting Australian industries with research aimed at efficient production. The partnership also seeks to honor the industrial legacies of both regions, evolving towards reduced carbon emissions in a rapidly changing world.

The hub will leverage NZIIC's advanced research in areas such as hydrogen, carbon capture, the circular economy, and smart energy, combined with UWA's global research capabilities and CODA's strategic industry engagement. Collaborative efforts will encompass joint research, knowledge sharing, and work-integrated learning, ensuring that researchers are deeply embedded in industry settings for immediate applicability.

The initiative will concentrate on three core themes: industrial emissions reduction, circular economy, and knowledge exchange. It specifically targets heavy industries, including mining, oil, gas, and cement, and aims to develop and implement carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies in synergy with industrial hubs like Kwinana and the Pilbara.

Additionally, the circular economy focus will enhance advanced manufacturing, promote industrial waste recycling, and support life cycle design, aligning with Western Australia’s "Made in WA" agenda. A joint governance structure will facilitate international collaboration, with representatives from NZIIC and Western Australian industries guiding the strategic direction to align with the state's diversification priorities.

This initiative is set to bolster the Western Australian CCUS Action Plan and the Accelerating Diversify WA strategy, which aspires to position the region as a global frontrunner in clean energy and sustainable industry. The MOU was ceremoniously signed at the state-of-the-art NZIIC facility in Middlesbrough, a beacon for net zero technologies and industrial cooperation.

As part of their visit, the Australian delegation toured the Teesworks site, the largest brownfield site in Europe, which is bustling with sustainable and low-carbon activities. Professor H.L. Ne de Burgh Woodman, UWA's Pro Vice Chancellor for Research Training, remarked that this international network will serve as a catalyst for innovation, enhancing research training opportunities that bridge the gap in modern technology.

Professor Zachary Aman, Chair of the Board of Studies in Mathematical and Physical Sciences at UWA, described the MOU as a foundation for a transformative partnership, one that will translate high technology readiness level research into tangible impacts, fostering skilled job creation while reinforcing Western Australia's innovation infrastructure. Dr. Francis Norman, CEO of CODA, added that the hub's focus is aligned with the vision of establishing a world-leading CCUS industry, essential for decarbonizing heavy industries and supporting economic diversification while ensuring Western Australia remains at the forefront of global market trends through robust industry support and innovative infrastructure.
