Investigation Confirms Arson at Lowell Hydroelectric Plant; Owner Plans Rebuild
The Lowell Hydroelectric Plant will be rebuilt following an arson fire confirmed to be set by juveniles. The incident, which occurred on April 12, resulted in significant structural damage, with plans for restoration now underway.

The Lowell Hydroelectric Plant, purchased in January 2026 for $825,000 by Lowell Hydropower Company LLC, sustained severe damage from an arson fire on April 12. An investigation identified juveniles as the culprits, with one admitting to starting the fire using a lighter, leading to a warrant for wanton conduct.
Firefighters faced challenges, including a collapsed roof and difficult water supply, but managed to contain the fire within an hour. Owner Justin Ahmann stated the company is committed to rebuilding and will provide updates on timelines and operational impacts as assessments proceed. The facility converts water flow into renewable electricity for the grid.
