Iowa State Mainframe Shutdown Marks End of 50-Year Computing Era
Iowa State University will deactivate its mainframe system on June 1, concluding a 50-year legacy of in-house computing. The transition to Workday products replaces the traditional administrative information systems, ADIN and AccessPlus.

On June 1, Iowa State University will shut down its mainframe system, concluding a 50-year era. The transition has been in preparation since 2019, when the university began migrating finance, HR, and student data systems to Workday, with completion expected by fall 2024.
The mainframe's legacy systems, primarily ADIN and AccessPlus, have been in read-only mode for 18 months. Most data has been transitioned, with only the last decade's worth stored in Workday due to costs.
A backup server in Germantown, Maryland will also be decommissioned. This shift reflects the ongoing evolution in computing infrastructure and the need for universities to adapt to modern technologies.
