Iran Threatens Submarine Cable Infrastructure in Gulf Region
Iran's threats to cut submarine cables pose risks to internet connectivity, banking systems, and cloud services in Gulf states. The attack could disrupt the digital infrastructure essential for economic diversification and technological advancements in the region.

Iran has indicated intentions to sever submarine cables crucial for internet connectivity in the Gulf region, thereby jeopardizing cloud services and banking systems. The Tasnim news agency, linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), highlighted the vulnerability of internet cables concentrated at the Strait of Hormuz.
Multiple key communication cables, including Falcon and SEA-ME-WE, serve Gulf states, linking them to major data centers across the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Past incidents show that damage to these cables can lead to significant service interruptions. The ongoing conflict with Iran has raised the risk of attacks on technology infrastructure, impacting the Gulf's investment in AI and digital services.
