Iran's Water Mismanagement Leads to Crisis and Potential Government Collapse

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

Iran's agricultural sector consumes 92% of the country's water withdrawals, significantly higher than the global average of 70%. This inefficient water use, driven by subsidized rates and poor agricultural policies, has led to severe depletion of renewable freshwater sources.

Three of the world's most water-stressed river basins—Qom, Harirud, and Helmand—are located in Iran, with groundwater levels plummeting. Current exploitation rates suggest 12 of Iran's 31 provinces may exhaust their aquifers within 50 years.

Rising food prices, exacerbated by currency devaluation and the water crisis, are causing malnutrition and social unrest, reminiscent of the Arab Spring. The situation calls for urgent investment in desalination and water management reforms.

Without intervention, food security will decline, leading to starvation and possible mass migration. Similar global trends indicate that aquifer depletion poses risks for food security worldwide.
