Iraq Enhances 400 kV Power Grid with Hybrid AC/DC Systems and AI Integration
The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is advancing the 400 kV Super Grid by integrating VSC-HVDC technology and Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) with AI and cybersecurity. This initiative aims to improve power quality and stability, reduce costs, and facilitate renewable energy integration.

The Iraqi power grid is undergoing a transformation by reconfiguring existing 400 kV transmission corridors into hybrid AC/DC systems utilizing VSC-HVDC and MMC technologies. This strategic framework leverages artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to enhance operational reliability and mitigate harmonic distortions, ultimately improving power quality and dynamic stability.
It allows for increased transmission capacity without new infrastructure while reducing capital expenditures and project timelines. These developments align with Iraq's clean energy goals and modernize the transmission network to accommodate future renewable energy expansion and regional interconnections. Continued collaboration among researchers and engineers is essential for translating these advancements into practical applications.
