Ireland Prepares for EU Council Presidency Focused on Energy and Environment
Ireland is set to assume the EU Council Presidency from July to December 2026, emphasizing energy security and climate action. Minister Darragh O'Brien is attending key meetings to align priorities with EU officials ahead of this critical term.

Minister Darragh O'Brien attended the ENVI Council meeting in Luxembourg, focusing on emissions regulations, the Water Resilience Strategy, and the REACH Regulation. Tomorrow, he will participate in the Energy Council, where discussions will center on the European Grids Package and strategies for achieving the 2040 Climate Target.
Ireland's Presidency will run from 1 July to 31 December 2026, positioning it centrally in EU decision-making. Key topics include energy affordability and security amid geopolitical tensions. O'Brien previously met with various EU Commissioners to set priorities on energy security and climate initiatives, including the review of the Emissions Trading System and the Circular Economy Act.
