IRENA and Canada Support Micro Hydro-Power Development in Bajura, Nepal

HYDRO POWER

The micro hydro-power (MHP) project in Bajura, Nepal, has improved the lives of local residents, including Lakshmi Kumari Sunar, by providing reliable electricity. By 2024, Nepal's off-grid hydropower capacity is set to reach 7,420 megawatts, connecting 921,000 people in rural areas.

The Government of Canada, through Natural Resources Canada, and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) are promoting distributed renewable energy (DRE) adoption in remote communities. IRENA, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme's Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihood (UNDP-RERL), has organized training for local technicians to enhance their skills in operating and maintaining MHPs.

This initiative has led to increased productivity and income for residents, with Lakshmi's monthly income rising to around NPR 30,000 (USD 200). The MHP has also facilitated the emergence of small businesses and improved community connectivity.
