Irish Government Approves LEAP Initiative for Renewable Energy-Powered Data Centers
The Irish government has approved the Large Energy User Action Plan (LEAP), aimed at managing energy-intensive sectors like data centers while supporting sustainability goals. Developed by the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, the plan shifts to a national framework for planning large electricity users.
A key feature is the establishment of Green Energy Parks, where data centers will colocate with renewable energy generation. These parks will focus on sectors such as data centers and semiconductors post-2030, with expected capacities in hundreds of megawatts.
Despite a moratorium on new data center builds in Dublin since 2021, it was partially lifted in December 2024, allowing developments that meet 80% of their energy demand from renewables. The plan emphasizes improved electricity system planning and coordination, though reactions have been mixed regarding its effectiveness.
