Irish Metal Refinery Linked to Russian War Supply Chain for Aluminum
An Irish metal refinery, Aughinish, is part of a supply chain delivering alumina to Russian arms manufacturers amid rising exports since 2022. In 2022, Ireland exported $243 million of alumina to Russia, a 55% increase from previous years, with projections of $376 million in 2024. Despite EU sanctions on individuals, trade continues legally as alumina is not banned. Aughinish is the sole alumina producer in Ireland and the largest in Europe, employing about 900 workers and supplying about 30% of the EU's alumina needs.

Aughinish, an Irish alumina refinery, is reportedly part of a supply chain supplying aluminum to Russian arms manufacturers. In 2022, Ireland exported $243 million of alumina to Russia, up 55% from earlier years, with forecasts reaching $376 million in 2024.
Aughinish, owned by Rusal, is the only alumina producer in Ireland, employing 900 people and supplying 30% of the EU's alumina. While EU sanctions target individuals, alumina exports are legal as they are not banned.
In 2024, around 500,000 tons valued at $200 million were sent from Aughinish to Rusal's Krasnoyarsk smelter, facilitating aluminum production for military applications. The supply chain is complex, allowing materials to reach military end-users despite existing sanctions.
