Italy Introduces Single Authorization Procedure for Data Centers in Energy Decree

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The Italian government has approved the Energy Decree, which introduces a single authorization procedure for Data Centers, effective from February 18, 2026. This measure aims to improve investment predictability and reduce risk in the digital infrastructure sector.

With 69 gigawatts of Data Center requests in Italy, the current electric network is nearly saturated. The decree emphasizes the need for effective coordination among regulatory bodies and energy providers to address the growing energy demands driven by AI technologies. It seeks to create a clearer regulatory framework to support the expansion of digital infrastructure, ultimately positioning Italy as a competitive hub in Europe.
