Italy's COSMO-SkyMed FM3 Satellite Launches Successfully with Initial Earth Images
Italy's COSMO-SkyMed FM3 satellite successfully launched on January 2, 2026, from Vandenberg Space Force Base, showcasing initial images of cities and landscapes, including Rome and the Padma River. The satellite is in excellent operational condition, with successful deployment of its solar panels and antennas, and is undergoing in-orbit testing to achieve full operational capability. This mission enhances Italy's Earth Observation capabilities, supporting various applications in environmental protection and emergency management.

The COSMO-SkyMed FM3 satellite, part of Italy's Earth Observation program promoted by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Ministry of Defence, successfully launched on 2 January 2026 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. Initial images showcase cities like Rome and Vancouver, as well as the Padma River in Bangladesh, confirming the satellite's expected performance and functionality.
The satellite is currently in excellent operational condition following successful deployment of solar panels, antenna, and onboard units. Telespazio, in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space Italy, managed imaging requests and data processing at ASI's Space Centre in Matera.
Ongoing in-orbit testing is crucial for achieving full operational capability. The COSMO-SkyMed program, utilizing advanced X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), enhances Italy's Earth Observation capabilities for civil and institutional applications, supporting environmental protection, emergency management, and territorial security.
