ITOCHU to Aggregate Demand for 300,000 Tons of Ammonia from NH3 Clean Energy’s Pilbara Project

NH3 Clean Energy and ITOCHU will collaborate over the next two years to develop ammonia bunkering operations in the Pilbara by 2030. ITOCHU aims to aggregate demand for 300,000 tons per year of CCS-based ammonia from NH3’s WAH2 production project, targeting a final investment decision (FID) in late 2026.

Partners in the Pilbara Clean Fuels Bunkering Hub include NH3 Clean Energy, Pilbara Ports Authority, Oceania Marine Energy, and Mitsui O.S.K Lines, with plans to establish ammonia bunkering at the Ports of Hedland and Dampier by 2030. ITOCHU is also developing bunker supply chains in Singapore and Japan, and signed a contract in July 2025 for the construction of the first ammonia bunker barge, expected to operate in Singapore from late 2027. FEED work on the WAH2 project commenced in September, and negotiations are ongoing with Pilbara Ports Authority for a land lease agreement for ammonia handling at the Port of Dampier.
