ITU Releases ION-2030 Framework for Future Optical Networks and AI Integration
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched the ION-2030 framework to guide global optical connectivity evolution. Developed by ITU-T Study Group 15, it aims to address the demands of 6G, AI, data centers, and broadband access. The framework emphasizes the interdependence of AI and optical networking, proposing a service-oriented architecture with terabit connectivity, integrated sensing, energy-efficient designs, and end-to-end service optimization.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has introduced the ION-2030 framework to enhance global optical connectivity in the context of AI and 6G networks. Developed by ITU-T Study Group 15, it outlines a strategic vision for optical networks, highlighting their critical role in supporting AI applications.
Key features include terabit-per-second connectivity, integrated AI capabilities, energy-efficient designs, and service optimization across network layers. Ongoing technical supplements will adapt the framework for specific applications like data centers and broadband access, ensuring that optical infrastructure evolves alongside AI and broadband needs.
