Jamaica's Government to Divest Soapberry Wastewater Treatment Plant for $100M Upgrade

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

The Jamaican Government is set to divest the Soapberry Wastewater Treatment Plant this year, with plans to double its capacity to 150,000 cubic metres per day. Minister Matthew Samuda announced that a private entity is expected to invest between $100 million and $150 million in the upgrade.

This project will support real estate development from Clarendon to St Thomas, where approximately 1.8 million residents live. The plant currently treats 75,000 cubic metres of wastewater daily, and the upgrade will enhance environmental sustainability through tertiary treatment. Additionally, plans to address Kingston's water challenges are underway, including the completion of the Rio Cobre Water Treatment Plant.
