Janesville Considers $8 Billion Data Center on Former GM Site
A Colorado firm proposes transforming a 250-acre brownfield in Janesville, Wisconsin, into a data center campus, backed by federal support. The initiative aims to revitalize the area, creating approximately 600 permanent jobs and 13,000 construction jobs while addressing extensive contamination issues.

Viridian Partners plans to purchase a former General Motors site in Janesville, Wisconsin, to develop an $8 billion data center campus. The project includes 11 buildings with 800 megawatts of capacity, alongside an estimated $30 million cleanup effort.
City officials view this as a critical opportunity for the 66,000-resident community that has struggled since the plant's closure. However, local opposition exists, with concerns about property values, electricity costs, and health issues due to noise.
The data center is projected to consume as much electricity as the Milwaukee metro area, necessitating a new electrical substation and infrastructure upgrades. With federal support for brownfield redevelopment, this initiative could set a precedent for similar projects nationwide.
