Japan Advances Space-Based Solar Power Technology for Future Energy Supply
Japan is progressing towards commercial space-based solar power, testing orbital energy harvesting and transmission technologies. This effort aims to provide a consistent energy supply, overcoming the limitations of terrestrial renewable sources.

Japan's space-based solar power (SBSP) initiative aims to harness solar energy in geostationary orbit and transmit it to Earth via microwaves. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and private partners are refining wireless power transmission systems, essential for consistent energy delivery, unaffected by terrestrial conditions.
Current challenges include high launch costs and the need for regulatory frameworks governing microwave transmission. JAXA's roadmap targets a pilot-scale orbital power system by the mid-2030s, contingent on reducing launch costs, developing lightweight solar technology, and ensuring safe microwave transmission. Success could significantly contribute to Japan's carbon neutrality goal by 2050.
