PNM Achieves 80% Carbon-Free Electricity by 2025 via Solar and Battery Investments
The Public Service Company of New Mexico reached 80% carbon-free electricity generation in 2025 through significant investments in solar and battery storage. This transition supports New Mexico's Energy Transition Act, mandating zero-carbon energy portfolios by 2045.

In 2025, PNM achieved 80% carbon-free electricity through extensive investments in solar photovoltaic systems and lithium-ion storage. The company accelerated its procurement of these resources in 2024 and 2025, enabling the use of midday solar surpluses during peak demand.
This shift comes in response to state regulations requiring zero-carbon retail energy portfolios by 2045. PNM's infrastructure development included advanced grid management tools to handle the integration of renewable resources.
Future efforts will focus on acquiring additional non-emitting resources and long-duration storage as regulatory proceedings dictate the next phase of resource development. The growing reliance on renewable energy sources presents challenges in grid reliability and necessitates active participation in wholesale markets for load balancing.
