Japan-New Zealand Hydrogen Corridor Consortium Formed to Explore Green Hydrogen Production
A consortium including Mitsui OSK Lines, Obayashi, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Chiyoda has been established to study green hydrogen production in New Zealand and its export to Japan. Feasibility studies will commence in fiscal 2026, with targeted imports in the early 2030s. The initiative aims to address Japan's low energy self-sufficiency and to position New Zealand as a key hydrogen supply hub, leveraging its renewable energy resources. The corridor will assess production, logistics, and supply chain requirements to facilitate large-scale hydrogen delivery.

The Japan-New Zealand Hydrogen Corridor consortium, formed by Mitsui OSK Lines, Obayashi, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Chiyoda, will study the commercial production of green hydrogen in New Zealand and its export logistics to Japan, starting feasibility work in fiscal 2026 and targeting imports by the early 2030s. The initiative aims to respond to Japan's low energy self-sufficiency and leverage New Zealand's renewable resources.
It will map supply-chain requirements and assess electrolyser siting, liquefaction options, and logistics. New Zealand's current hydrogen production is limited, but efforts are underway to scale up production as Japan seeks to enhance its hydrogen supply for decarbonisation.
