Japan Proposes Record Defense Budget to Combat Recruitment Shortfalls
Japan's Ministry of Defense is set to request 8.5 trillion yen ($59 billion) for the next fiscal year. This includes 18 billion yen ($123 million) for an AI surveillance system to enhance military base security amid severe recruitment challenges.

Japan's Self Defense Forces (SDF) achieved only 10,000 new enlistments last year, reaching just 50% of its target. The proposed defense budget represents a 6.9% increase and aims to double defense spending, emphasizing AI and automation to mitigate staffing issues.
In addition to the AI system, the budget allocates funds for unmanned drones and three automated air defense warships, which will operate with significantly fewer crew members. This strategic pivot is essential as Japan seeks to fortify its defenses against regional threats, particularly from China. As global military dynamics shift, Japan's focus on advanced technology may provide a more resilient defense structure.
