Japanese Companies Plan Floating Data Center in Decommissioned Ship
A floating data center project aims to utilize decommissioned ships, with a targeted launch by 2027. This initiative addresses growing demand for data centers spurred by AI usage and mitigates land-use challenges.

Two Japanese companies are collaborating to construct a floating data center inside a decommissioned ship, specifically a car carrier with a potential floor area of 54,000 m². The project is projected to reduce construction time to one year compared to the three years required for traditional land-based centers.
This approach eliminates the need for land acquisition and can leverage seawater for cooling. Initial projects are planned for Japan, with potential expansion to Malaysia or the United States. The floating data center aims to fulfill increasing demand driven by AI advancements.
