Japan's Semiconductor Industry Revival and Strategic Investments
Japan aims to restore its semiconductor market share from about 10% to 30% by 2030 through significant public and private investments. Key projects include Rapidus and JASM, targeting advanced semiconductor technology and production capacity.

Japan is intensifying efforts to regain its semiconductor industry prominence, with a goal to increase domestic semiconductor revenues from approximately 5 trillion JPY in 2020 to over 15 trillion JPY by 2030. The government plans to allocate more than 10 trillion JPY in public support for AI and semiconductor initiatives, anticipating total investment mobilization exceeding 50 trillion JPY.
Major projects include Rapidus, targeting 2 nm logic chip production, and the Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) initiative in Kumamoto, backed by TSMC. These developments are expected to enhance regional economic activity, creating over 10,700 jobs. Collaboration between Japanese firms like Sony and TSMC further strengthens Japan's position in advanced imaging sensors.
