JBI Seeks Bauxite Growth Amid Guinea Export Restrictions
Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI) urges protection of bauxite lands as production struggles post-Hurricane Melissa. The country's bauxite output in 2025 fell to 5.63 million tonnes, with ongoing initiatives to improve industry resilience amid Guinea's tightened export limits.

In 2025, Jamaica's bauxite production decreased by 4.4% to 5.63 million tonnes, exacerbated by Hurricane Melissa's impact. The Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI) has highlighted the need to safeguard bauxite-bearing lands amid unauthorized settlements, which threaten future mining and agricultural projects.
The JBI is enhancing monitoring efforts as it anticipates intensified enforcement in the upcoming financial year. Investments in the sector include Century Aluminum's USD 80 million refinery upgrade and Discovery Bauxite's USD 45 million infrastructure expansion. However, with Guinea's potential export cap reduced from 1.83 MTPA to 1.5 MTPA, Jamaica’s capacity to fill the resulting supply gap remains limited, potentially covering only 23.33% of the deficit.
