Jiangnan Shipyard Advances in Type B Cargo Containment System for VLECs
Jiangnan Shipyard has developed an independent Type B cargo containment system, enhancing its capabilities in high-complexity vessel construction. This milestone positions China to reduce reliance on foreign technologies and improve the efficiency of liquefied gas carrier production.

Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd. has successfully completed its first aluminum alloy Type B cargo tank, marking a significant advancement in cryogenic containment technology. The shipyard has transitioned to producing liquefied gas carriers, with plans to deliver 23 vessels this year, including 13 very large ethane carriers (VLECs).
The company’s production efficiency has improved dramatically, reducing the assembly time for Type B tanks from 140 days to 88 days. As Jiangnan Shipyard embraces smart manufacturing, it has established a 5G Intelligent Manufacturing Innovation Lab to optimize production workflows and enhance automation. This shift is crucial as the shipbuilding industry faces challenges in balancing productivity with quality.
