Johannesburg Mayor Reports Slow Recovery of Water Levels in Midrand Amid Supply Issues

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero announced that reservoir levels in Midrand are slowly improving, despite ongoing concerns about water supply. Rand Water is currently pumping at full capacity following an electrical failure at a pump station and a leak affecting Gauteng.

Four of the five reservoirs supplying Midrand have reopened, with efforts to provide alternative water supplies through mobile and stationary tankers. However, Morero noted that water levels have not yet reached optimal supply levels, particularly in Grand Central, which remains isolated from the other reservoirs.

Rand Water highlighted high consumption rates in Johannesburg and Tshwane as a significant strain on the water supply network, exacerbated by the growth of both formal and informal settlements. Upgrades to the Midrand water systems are underway to address these challenges.
