Joint Funding Secured for $140 Million Expansion of St. John's Wastewater Treatment Facility

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

The wastewater treatment plant in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, will undergo a $140 million expansion funded by federal, provincial, and municipal governments. The federal government is contributing $69 million, and the provincial government $34 million, with the remaining funding split between St.

John's, Mount Pearl, and Paradise. The project aims to enhance primary sewage treatment capacity and prepare for a secondary treatment facility, increasing capacity from 135 million to 160 million liters.

The first phase will take about five years to complete, and disruptions to residents are anticipated. St. John's covers 81% of the municipal share, while Mount Pearl and Paradise contribute 14% and 5%, respectively.
