Jokey and REMONDIS Initiate Closed-loop Recycling for PP Food Packaging
Jokey Group and REMONDIS are collaborating on a pilot project in the Ruhr region aimed at recycling polypropylene food packaging into food-grade recyclate. The project's compliance with the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is crucial for achieving a minimum of 10% recycled content by 2030.

The Jokey Group and REMONDIS have initiated a pilot project focused on the collection and recycling of polypropylene (PP) food packaging in the Ruhr region. This project aims to produce food-grade recyclate from collected plastic packaging, particularly targeting PP buckets widely used in large-scale kitchens.
REMONDIS manages the collection and processing of the plastic waste, while Jokey utilizes the recyclate for new packaging. The recycling method has been submitted to the European Commission for approval as a 'Novel Technology' to meet regulatory standards for food-contact materials.
This initiative is critical as the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation mandates increasing recycled content in plastic packaging by 2030. Key to the success of this circular economy model is the quality of input streams, which necessitates well-defined collection systems.
