JPS Implements Changes Following June 5 Blackout Investigation
Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is executing recommendations from a 350-page report to prevent future blackouts. The measures include upgrading protection equipment and enhancing system reliability in collaboration with the Office of Utilities Regulation.

Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has begun implementing recommendations from an investigative report regarding the June 5 islandwide blackout. The blackout resulted from a lightning strike at the Hunts Bay substation, with service restored by 6:34 AM on June 6.
Key recommendations involve replacing protection equipment, reviewing system settings, and accelerating the modernization of protection systems. Further, JPS plans to collaborate with independent power producers to reassess protective settings on generation units.
The investigation, aided by international experts, found that the fault was unprecedented and prolonged, leading to instability in the electricity grid. The Energy Ministry is currently reviewing the report.
