HYDRO POWER

Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has restored electricity to 90% of its customers in St Elizabeth following damage from Hurricane Melissa. Utilizing the Maggotty Hydroelectric Power Plant, JPS created an isolated network, 'The Maggotty Island', which provides power to approximately 2,000 customers otherwise without service for months.

The hydro plant generates up to 12 megawatts and is one of six operated by JPS. The restoration strategy includes mobile power generation units supplying electricity to nearly 1,000 customers in Treasure Beach.

JPS President and CEO Hugh Grant emphasized the importance of innovative solutions in the face of challenges, while Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness announced additional resources to expedite restoration efforts. JPS aims to continue improving service delivery while permanent repairs are underway.
