Jupiter Power to Develop 400 MW Battery Storage Facility in Hayden, Colorado
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission approved a 400 MW utility-scale battery energy storage facility in Hayden, to be developed by Jupiter Power. The project will be located on a 72-acre site near the Hayden Power Station and Yampa Valley Regional Airport, connecting to the Mount Harris substation. Xcel Energy will purchase the stored energy through a Power Purchase Agreement. Construction is expected to start in 2027, with operations aimed for 2028, supporting over 200 jobs during peak construction.

A 400 MW battery energy storage facility in Hayden, Colorado, has been approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, part of 10 projects accepted for a total of 4,100 MW of new energy generation. Developed by Jupiter Power, the facility will be on a 72-acre site near the Hayden Power Station and Yampa Valley Regional Airport, connecting to the Mount Harris substation via a new transmission line.
Xcel Energy will purchase the stored energy through a Power Purchase Agreement. Construction is anticipated to start in 2027, with commercial operations targeted for 2028, creating over 200 jobs. The project aligns with the planned closure of the Hayden coal-fired power plant, with Unit 2 retiring in 2027 and Unit 1 in 2028.
