Kabalega International Airport to be Handed Over in March 2026 After Final Construction Updates
Kabalega International Airport is scheduled to be officially handed over to Uganda's Ministry of Works and Transport in March 2026, following the completion of contractor obligations by SBC. The contractor is finalizing the Mobile Air Traffic Control Tower and constructing a meteorological structure for weather monitoring, in compliance with requirements from Uganda and the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
The airport is powered by a 2.5 MW hydropower substation, with backup generators for continuous power supply. Minister Gen. Katumba Wamala proposed the addition of solar power for security lighting.
The airport, which began construction in 2018, has faced delays due to challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic. It occupies 5.1 square kilometers, with the facility covering 600 square meters and capable of accommodating four large cargo planes and over ten average-sized planes.
