Kambarata Hydropower Plant-1 Project Advances with Significant Funding and Construction Progress
The Kambarata Hydropower Plant-1 project, with a capacity of 1,860 megawatts, has entered the implementation phase, showing progress in 2025 in engineering and investment. The World Bank is supporting the project with an additional $13.6 million, totaling $18.6 million for environmental assessments, and is considering up to $1.5 billion for construction.
Nine international donors are prepared to invest about $2.5 billion. A draft intergovernmental agreement was sent to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on September 30, 2025. Significant preparatory work includes completion of an 8.6-kilometer access road, partial completion of a 4.7-kilometer section towards the site, finished drilling in the TT-2 tunnel, and construction of a 110-kilovolt power line. A shift camp for 100 workers is 60-70 percent complete.
