Kano DisCo Achieves 50% Growth in Industrial Power Consumption Amid Nigeria's Energy Challenges

HYDRO POWER

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (Kano DisCo) reported a 50% increase in industrial power consumption in 2025, rising from 43.33 GWh in January to 62.14 GWh by December, totaling approximately 569 GWh over eleven months. This growth contrasts with the broader trend in Nigeria, where manufacturers are increasingly relying on self-generation due to unreliable grid supply.

Kano DisCo's success is attributed to infrastructure upgrades financed by Future Energy Africa, including dedicated 33-kilovolt feeders for major manufacturers like Dangote and Coca-Cola, achieving 95% service compliance. The company is also pursuing bilateral power purchase agreements with hydroelectric producers to reduce costs and has launched a Special Tariff Program for Bulk Consumers.

Additionally, negotiations are underway to connect Lee Group to the grid, potentially boosting industrial expansion further. Despite these gains, Nigeria's power sector still faces systemic challenges, including gas supply issues and low grid generation capacity.
