Kargil Airport Upgrade: Constraints for Large Aircraft Operations
Kargil Airport currently cannot accommodate large aircraft due to runway limitations, but upgrades may allow smaller planes. The successful introduction of smaller aircraft is contingent on commercial viability and sufficient passenger traffic.

Ladakh's Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena stated that Kargil Airport's runway, measuring approximately 6,000 feet, is unsuitable for large aircraft due to its short, narrow, and worn-out condition. Although an extension of 3,000 feet is possible, significant operational challenges remain, including a difficult landing approach and limited operational sides.
Upgrades could permit 19 or 26-seat smaller aircraft, but this depends on commercial viability. The Air Force and civil authorities are prepared for operations, highlighting a focus on passenger demand. The Lt Governor also addressed broader regional initiatives, including employment boosts, environmental sustainability projects, and urban infrastructure improvements.
