Karwar Social Forestry Division Implements Solar Power Initiative, Generates Revenue
The Social Forestry Division office in Karwar has reduced its electricity costs by over 80% through a rooftop solar system while generating surplus income by selling excess power to the grid. This initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance renewable energy usage in government buildings.

The installation of a 5 kW rooftop solar power system at the Social Forestry Division office in Karwar has decreased monthly electricity expenses from Rs 5,000-6,000 to a fixed charge of Rs 1,000, resulting in over 80% savings. Operational since April, the system generates approximately 600 units monthly, with peak production reaching 29.5 units in a day.
Surplus electricity is sold to the Hubballi Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) at Rs 3.08 per unit, with 292 units already sold. Plans are underway to install additional 2 kW systems at seven other offices in Uttara Kannada, following a directive from local parliamentary representatives. This shift to solar energy may influence future energy policies and encourage similar initiatives across government sectors.
