Kawasi Spring Conservation Efforts by Harita Nickel
The conservation of the Kawasi spring in North Maluku is vital for maintaining local water supplies amid mining activities. This initiative highlights the importance of sustainable water management in industrial operations, which could serve as a model for similar mining contexts.

Harita Nickel's operations in Kawasi Village span 4,247 hectares and primarily utilize surface water from Lake Karo, which discharges approximately 70,000 cubic meters per day. The Kawasi spring, preserved for community use, is located outside the mining site; periodic water quality tests confirm that it remains uncontaminated.
In 2024, Harita's water withdrawal for domestic and processing purposes was 41,169 megalitres, constituting 5% of its total withdrawal. The company employs various environmental management strategies, including sediment retention ponds and dry stack tailing facilities, to minimize water pollution and enhance water reuse. Given that South Halmahera has a low access rate to safe drinking water, collaborative efforts between companies and local governments are essential for safeguarding water sources.
