Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) plans to increase its production capacity by 253 megawatts to meet rising electricity demand, which peaked at 2,444.40 megawatts in January 2026. This demand marks an increase from 2,439.06 megawatts in December 2025.

The capacity expansion includes projects such as the 63 MW Olkaria 1 rehabilitation, a 42.5 MW solar project, the 80 MW Olkaria VII project, and upgrades to hydropower facilities. In the half-year to December 2025, KenGen's electricity generation rose to 7,805 GWh, while net profit fell 25.4% to Sh4.22 billion due to lower financial income and increased tax expenses. The company is also implementing a 200 MW Battery Energy Storage System to support grid stability.
