Kentucky Energy Planning Commission Approves Strategy for Managing Electricity Demand Growth
The Kentucky Energy Planning and Inventory Commission (EPIC) has approved a strategic plan to manage anticipated growth in electricity demand due to data centers and energy-intensive industries. The initiative focuses on developing accurate demand forecasts and assessing the need for new generation capacity while avoiding unnecessary infrastructure costs for consumers. This marks EPIC's first comprehensive work plan since its establishment in 2024 and will guide its annual report to the legislature in 2026.

The Kentucky Energy Planning and Inventory Commission (EPIC) approved a plan to manage a potential surge in electricity demand driven by data centers and energy-intensive industries. The plan aims to balance the need for sufficient power supply without overbuilding infrastructure that increases costs for consumers.
EPIC will develop accurate demand forecasts, assess the need for new generation capacity, and evaluate Kentucky's transmission infrastructure. The initiative addresses the mismatch in timelines between the operational readiness of data centers (18-24 months) and new power plants (5-7 years).
EPIC will form three working committees with stakeholders to model demand scenarios and their implications. This strategic plan is EPIC's first comprehensive work plan since its establishment by the General Assembly in 2024 and will inform its annual report to the legislature in 2026.
